Knowledge

Explore the diverse world of materials within the Knowledge section. Here, you'll find comprehensive information, including images and definitions, covering all key yarn types. It's a deep dive into the fabric of the textile industry.

Acetate

Acetate fiber is made from cellulose acetate by a spinning process, when cellulose reacts with acetic anhydride, cellulose acetate is obtained.

Acrylic

Acrylic is a fossil fuel-based fiber, designed to be similar to wool. One of the most prominent uses of the fibre is in knitting.

Air Texturised Yarn

Air-textured yarn (ATY) is created by subjecting yarn to a cold air stream (air-jet texturing) to produce bulked yarns with millions of small loops.

Alpaca Wool

Alpaca wool is considered to be a luxury fibre, with many beneficial properties. It is often used to make designer and high-end garments.

Angora Wool

Angora wool fibers are among the finest types of wool fibers, producing yarns and fabrics that are incredibly silky and soft.

Bamboo Pulp

A semi-synthetic viscose cellulose extracted from bamboo.

Camel Wool

Camel wool fibre usually comes from the Bactrian camel that are known for their long, lustrous hair and large twin humps. Both undercoat (softer, high grade) and gaurd hair (hard and corse) can be used.

Cashmere Wool

Cashmere is made from the hair of a goat native to the Gobi Desert and Central Asia and has long been considered the softest and most luxurious types of wool in existence.

Conductive Yarn

Conductive yarn is usually composed of a long staple fibre combined with stainless steel or carbon fibres. They have a constant electrostatic and/or electromagnetic protective effect on the textiles.

Cotton

A staple fiber made from the fibers surrounding the seeds of cotton plants. It is spun and knitted/weaved to create soft durable fabrics.

Cupro

Cupro is a rayon fibre made with linter (a part of the cotton seed normally disposed of). Also known by its tradename Bemberg.

Drawn Texturised Yarn

Refers to polyester partially oriented yarn (POY) that has been simultaneously drawn and twisted, it is also known as interlaced yarn. This yarn is commonly used for leggings.

Dyneema

Dyneema® is a polyethylene fiber that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight.

Elastane

Also known as Lycra or Spandex, its chemical name is polyurethane fiber.

Fully Drawn Yarn

Fully drawn yarn is produced at high spinning speeds and drawn to its full extent to allow stabilisation through orientation and crystallization. The fiber is smooth and creates fabrics that aren't fluffy, have a hard feeling and low bre…

Hemp

A plant fibre, made from the stalks of Cannabis Sativa plant. It is a sustainable choice as it cleans toxins in thesoil, requires water only from rainfall and has a short turnover period.

Kevlar

Kevlar is a para-aramid synthetic fiber, often used in a variety of clothing, accessories, and safety equipment due to its durability and strength. Similar aramid brands include Twaron and Technora.

Linen

Linen is a flax-based textile that is predominantly used for homeware applications and apparel, highly used in hot and humid climates.

Lyocell

Cellulose fibre produced by solvent spinning method with NMMO solvent, it is a form of rayon. Commonly used as a more sustainble option to cotton or silk. It is co called Tencel.

Merino Wool

Merino is an inexpensive and durable natural fibre that can be made into a luxurious soft material (countering the scratchiness associated with wool).

Milk Fibre

Milk fibre is made with the casein powder found in milk and often mixed with acrylonitrile making it a semi-synthetic material. It has a cotton-like texture and tensility.

Modal

Also known as high-wet-modulus rayon (HWM rayon). A semi-synthetic fibre since it is made from a combination of organic (hard wood) and synthetic materials.

Mohair Wool

Angora goats have shaggy hair that produces a silky and multipurpose wool. The wool tends to be much softer than sheep wool and has a unique luster/sheen.

Nomex

Nomex®, is a meta-aramid fiber. It is used in protective clothing for its heat and flame resistant properties.

Nylon (Polyamide)

A fibre made from strings of polyamide monomers, this fibre is entirely sythetic.

Polyester

A synthetic fabric derived from petroleum. One of the world's most popular textiles, it can be blended with cotton to improve shrinkage, durability, and wrinkling profile.

Polytrimethylene terephthalate

PTT is a thermoplastic that combines the chemical resistance characteristics of polyester with the elastic recovery and resilience of Nylon. It has been labeled as Triexta by DuPont.

Pre Orientated Yarn/ Partially Orientated Yarn

Polyester yarn is formed through a melt spinning process, in which the fibre is drawn and sketched five times its size to orient the polymer appropriately. It is commonly used to create DTY and ATY yarns.

Ramie

Known also as China-grass, rhea and grass cloth, ramie is a com fiber crop that is very fine like silk and one of the strongest natural fibres.

Seacell

A cellulose fiber (produced in the same way as Lyocell) with seaweed added as an active ingredient to promote good health. The harvesting of seaweed is also a sustainable pratice.

Silk

Silk is a protein fiber, one of the strongest natural fibers in the world. Popular due to its softness and luxurious shine.

Sorona

Sorona was created by DuPont, it is a plant-based polymer commonly used as a sustainable alternative to spandex.

Supima Cotton

U.S. grown pima cotton, represents 1% of the cotton in the world. Supima cotton is unique because of its longer staple fiber (1.5 inches, compared to regular cotton which is 1 inch) that gives it superior strength, softness and color retent…

Tencel

Tencel is a brand of lyocell made from Eucalyptus, by Lenzing AG.

TPU

TPU yarns or TPU coated yarns (usually polyester) are used for waterproof applications and to add 3D structure to final products. It is also used as an alternative to silicone.

Virgin Wool

Refers to wool from a lamb's first shearing or wool that has not been recycled.

Viscose

Also known as rayon, viscose is a semi-sythetic fabric that is commonly used as an alternative to cotton.

Yak Wool

Yaks have adapted to the extreme conditions of the Himalayas, producing long fine hair with many amazing properties.
