Shapewear Trend Report

Comfort - Fitting - Support - Flexibility - Compression

The innovations by Santoni are explored in regular updates that examine new developments in stitch, yarn, fiber, engineering and technical knowledge for the circular knitting market.

With a promised reduction of 1 to 2 inches off your torso, there is little chance of modern shapewear declining in popularity anytime soon. Shapewear (formerly achieved via corsetry) has been used in various forms in western civilization for the past 500 years and there is evidence to show that even in early Crete the Minoan civilization used a form of shapewear, for both men and women. Coming full circle, we now find that shapewear is popular with both sexes, as fashions for men have become slimmer and women appreciate the affordable way to quickly change their shape without going under the knife of plastic surgery.

  • Comfort - Fitting - Support - Flexibility - Compression -

The seamless knitted structure and use of lycra, spandex or some recent developed eco variations allows for a much more comfortable fit than what our ancestors potentially wore, with the soft support allowing us to move easily and bend, such that it is being integrated into activewear to help improve circulation and posture. For fashion looks, the engineered circular knitting can funnel the excess padding into places such as above and below the waist to achieve the classic hourglass figure.

  • Second Skin - Support - Compression - Shape -

As with athletic wear, breathability and moisture absorption are crucial components to making a foundation garment comfortable, thus the use of natural fibers plays an integral part of the new developments in this field. As detailed in our project with the Woolmark Company, merino wool is one of the leading natural fibers that is perfect for providing technical seamless performance and soft compression apparel that enhances the wearer’s experience while in motion.
