Terry is one of the most commercial and common structures, its soft and warming texture reminds us of a soft blanket or a warming hoodie. It’s one of the standard configurations on the Santoni single jersey machinery. With its extensive applications and plenty of unexplored options, it’s a true hero for anyone interested in innovative and trendy applications.

Textiles have been used to protect our skin from the hars rays of sunlight since humans first started weaving cloth. Nowadays, we can actually rate the level of sun protection provided by textiles with the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). With the highest protection being offered by specially manufactured yarns, that have been treated in the spinning process. Fun fact: did you know according to a study by the University of Alberta, darker colors actually provide a better UV protection than light colors?! The stitches used for this piece, are called 'drop stitches’. These are ideal for creating more open and airy fabrics. By playing with the size of the stitch it is possible to create smaller and bigger openings. Resulting in different levels of breathability, like cooling zones while giving the piece a beautiful lace-like aesthetic. In this case, we used a special kind of yarn to avoid laddering or breakage after wearing and washing.

Project in the spotlight: Juventus Academy Shanghai x MEC This Juventus Academy Shanghai seamless activewear collection is strong and long lasting while also being lightweight, breathable and moisture managing. The team found a way to include the Juventus logo and jersey number with name lettering, on the clothing — that’s right, seamlessly assembled while the garments were being made. This all-in-one production is game changing as it avoids any post-processing, ideal for quick, agile and easy personalization. We love the outcome of these pieces!

Fleece reinvented: We challenge ourselves to renew materials that are all around us. A personalized approach where structures can be engineered, refined and detailed depending on the needs and desires of the wearer is our goal. That is why we created the Engineered Fleece collection: a super soft, ‘new’ type of fleece, developed around the ideas of comfort x beauty x tactility. Studio Eva x Carola

Within our busy day-to-day lives, self-care is of utmost importance. That's why people are putting more focus on adding natural and protective items to their wardrobes. One way the industry is providing in this growing need is by using anti-microbial fibers and yarns in their fabrics. A good example of an anti-microbial fiber is Merino wool. It naturally has antimicrobial properties and is (therefore) naturally odor resistant as well. Want to discover more about fibers and yarns and their attributes? We are experiencing more extreme temperature swings due to climate change, from very hot to very cold. MEC is therefore continuously exploring ways for the textile industry to alleviate the carbon footprint and improve industrial practices to help slow the increase in temperature. Besides that, it would be remiss to not focus our energies on clothing that will be able to insulate and protect us from extreme temperatures in even better ways. By using the best yarns and stitching techniques for the job, we are able to create garments that are very comfortable to wear and insulate against extreme temperatures. Fabrics made in this way have a good moisture absorption and are similar to those made with staple fiber. At MEC, we approach the designing process in a non-traditional way. We start by deep-diving into the needs of the end consumer for the product we're designing: For instance, how stretchy or breathable does the fabric need to be? Based on all these needs, we select adequate yarn(s) and performance features for technical engineering. With the use of advanced Santoni technology, we develop the unique and perfect textiles needed to create your end product. ”When everything unnecessary is left out, the characteristics of the materials become more prominent and the design follows naturally. Natural raw tones give more power to the statement of sustainable thinking and toxic-free design.” - Matilda Tuure Matilda Tuure is a designer and creative researcher. She specialized in circular thinking, material-driven design processes and unexplored biomaterials amongst others. As nature is her source of inspiration, it is important for her to protect it in all her designs. This outdoor jacket is biodegradable and eco-friendly, it’s a fully functional design. The vertical lines, for example, aid in the waterproof level of the anorak. The non-toxic water-repellent coating on the fabric made the water droplets roll down perfectly. Yixian Lin was inspired for this collection by the body of pregnant women and researched where most discomfort arises. That's why these garments have extra support around the abdomen and chest area thanks to a hanging needle stitch. A tight stitch in the back gives another supportive structure, whereas the mesh stitch at the shoulders provides extra ventilation. Providing more comfort during pregnancy. This design is created during the Santoni Pioneer Program (SPP). Check out more about this collection : https://materialliance.com/en/showcases/freedom-support-by-yixian-lin/1092

For this material, we used the technique of air trapping to give the material insulating properties. The small pockets “trap” the air in one place, ensuring the air around stays at the preferred temperature. At the same time, ventilation is essential, to keep the material dry. This is done by using a tight-knit and moisture-controlled yarn like casein fibre. Click here to find out more about this fabric: https://materialliance.com/en/page/support/product-sdjs10721/27427#

The love of Queenie Cheng for geometry is perfectly showcased in this item! The 3D pattern of these bags is created by foldable structures and clever geometric design. Fun fact: By playing with the combination of different materials and stitch structures, it was possible to realize the designer’s geometrical foldable structure using a seamless tube to finalize a zero-waste bag made out of recycled polyester yarn. Where most fabrics are made waterproof with a coating after processing, at MEC we created the fabric to be waterproof from the core. Creating a longer-lasting water repellent effect and a high-value product. A fabric that can be used for multiple purposes! Combined with the right structures and machine set up we create a woven-like material that can cover for light rainfall outside. As the fabrics are all created as a seamless tube with our Santorini machines, it is also ideal for furniture. It is truly an all-in-one product that is ready to be used without complex processes or post-engineering. At MEC it is super important to collaborate and encourage cross-thinking, we love to remove the barriers in communication between design and production so designers can discover new stitch and garment applications. The biggest challenge during the design and creation of these poufs was to create something that is natural but also resilient, dense, yet stable and flexible. The poufs now feature a beautiful gradient of colors and textures that are brought to life with Santoni’s seamless and circular knitting technologies. Check out the full article : https://materialliance.com/en/page/news/bringing-new-ideas-to-life-with-case-studies/28168 - At MEC, we collaborate with designers and use our technology to help them make their abstract concepts an actuality. From start to finish, we lend our catalog of yarns, fabrics, and allow the process of innovation to run smoothly. Interested in working with us? Contact us through our profile or email

This beautiful fabric is a type of double jersey fabric, with the surface of each side feeling silky and smooth to the touch. With spandex as a core material, it provides the textile with added elasticity and recoverability. These kinds of fabrics can be developed with the double jersey large diameter technolgy

Creating authentic materials built from the yarn up and avoiding post-processing like printing techniques is not only a sustainable way of working, but also gives you the possibility to have very detailed graphics embedded within the materials. With these color sensations and graphic capabilities it also opens possibilities for new markets such as the automotive industry, which is traditionally focused on less sustainable products like leather. How do you include sustainability within your design process?

From field to city, football apparel is more than just a uniform on the field. ⚽️These uniforms were designed and created for Juventus Shanghai Academy. Did you know? - The Juventus logo and jersey numbers are seamlessly assembled while the garments were being made. 3D structures are very versatile. They can be used to soundproof a room, but also to insulate heat. Due to 3D structures, like those in this post, height and pocketing are created within the fabric. These small air pockets provide a warmer feeling and better insulating fabrics. Did you know: 3D structures are also often used for protection (think of packaging materials), so it’s ideal to use for special areas like elbow patches as well.
