Material Experience Center Builds Solutions That Lasts

To reinvent innovation, MEC aims to build textile solutions that surpasses expectations, endures the test of time, and makes a statement. Through a reverse approach of production, rather than the traditional way, the ‘Yarn & Machine Up’ workflow has proved to be the route for future material construction.

Body Analysis
Rather than working our way up from a sketch design, we begin with pinpointing market and consumer needs, the intention of our creation, sustainability objectives and performance technicalities. We play around with materials for inspiration and combine our expertise in textile creation to set a start and a finish point for a product.

Machine Selection
Santoni’s tech-savvy textile machines execute pattern and technical feature engineering, structure formation with multiple types of yarns, and unique textile production in one go. This advanced technology has a wide scope of creation that provides us with endless possibilities of material combinations — allowing us to discover the perfect fit for the prototype while meeting end-user needs.

Yarn Selection
Whether the textiles we create will be used toward apparel and footwear or interior automotive design — intention and longevity of the material are at the forefront. Therefore, we select yarn(s) from our extensive Material Library to mesh and to experiment with performance technicalities, desired features, and sustainability routes.

Programming & Initial Pattern Testing
Once the final material composition for zoned engineering is identified, we move on to creating our textiles from a stitch-to-stitch level upwards — making this ‘Yarn & Machine Up’ step a catalyst for the next actions in the development process. Close communication between our designer(s) and in-house engineering team implies trials for potential adjustments between yarns, stitches and machinery.

Body Mapping
After we’ve explored different pattern design tests and have found the ideal combination, we continue shaping and engineering towards a final prototype. Here we feel out the material and test that all functional features are zoned in the right position. We sketch directly onto the textile to perfect its features — aiming to create an all-in-one product.

Engineering
Engineering is the fine-tuning of the textile created and it can be done before or after body mapping. In this step we modify and tailor aspects that can be improved. Where form follows function. These final touches are to adjust the textile to what the end-user wants and needs, plus our unique futuristic look and feel.

Prototype
When the ideal textile is created and has been molded to the end-user product, we have created a final prototype — physical proof of concept from our ‘Yarn & Machine Up’ development process. Santoni technology fabricates pieces in one take, diminishes material waste, and allows for avant-garde design and tailoring. Ultimately, meeting exact end-consumer needs and prepared for final bulk production.
