Trend Report: AI Stitch

The innovations by MEC are explored in regular updates that examine new developments in stitch, yarn, fiber, engineering and technical knowledge for the circular knitting market.

It is believed that the invention of lace took pace at some point in Europe during the late middle ages, although where exactly is hard to pinpoint as Italy and Belgium vie for the title to be the first to invent lace.

While there are many different techniques of lace, for our purposes we focus on the lacy stitches that are achievable in circular and seamless knitting, and how A.I. fantasy fashion is providing direction for new stitch development in this area.

While traditionally lace stitch structures mean that there must be holes, or open spaces that create the pattern, often with flowery or scrolling aspects, the new lace-like textures we see being generated by A.I. designers are creating new interpretations that appear to be lace on top of lace, creating an almost solidly intricate material.

This is interpreted by seamless technology via twisting 3D jacquards and open pointelle stitches, allowing us to mix the two into a richly layered garment that echoes the appearance of these new directions.

Other A.I designs inspire softly textural stitches that can be created in seamless and circular knitting via terry structures and ruched and 3D jacquards.

While lace structures and patterns are known for their mathematical precision, it is the soft asymmetry of these other tactile stitches that look modern and help evolve the surfaces of our everyday into an other-worldly interpretations.
